Stop.Look.Listen. Podcast #17 *FREE TRACK DL PACK*

At last - here it is - episode 17 of the SLL Podcast series. I've been a little absent the last couple of weeks owing to frantic job interviews, but it does mean I had a wicked backlog of music to dig through and serve up for y'all.

The mix was compiled in the blazing sunshine in Sydney today, so I'm hoping I've captured some in the selection. Expect lots of lush downtempo hip-hop, funk, dub and electronica, as well as the usual quirky bits 'n' pieces. There are some epic free compilations out there at the moment, including new business from First Word with their latest 'Two Syllables' and Groovement's brand new 'Volume One' long-player, both of which are previewed here.

Also, as of this week I'll be offering-up all the free promos as a one-click download, if you fancy spicing-up your iPod and listening to some amazing new music. Enjoy!

Handbook - Rare Ivory EP (Free Download)

Hailing from the home of wonderful ales and incredible tea, Handbook is a name which keeps cropping up, with the Yorkshire lad consistently delivering beats so inspired you'd be forgiven for thinking he was a veteran west coast producer.

Handbook's sound is a dreamy piano-led soundscape, giving more than a nod to the future beats scene but with a style uniquely his, weaving broken beat/hip-hop rhythms around uplifting instrumental samples to create infectious downtempo melodies.

His latest EP is no different - four brand new tracks and accompanying remixes to give the originals a lift for the funkier, housier floors. And all for gratis! A bargain indeed.

Handbook's 'Rare Ivory' EP is out now via Filthy Fortune Records, for free download via Bandcamp (see below)

Yosi Horikawa - Vapor (First Word Records)

I've just come back from an interview at Universal Music Australia (eek - fingers crossed for me, ay?!) so I'm a bit wired from all the adrenaline. As a result, I'm feeling mega inspired to share some recent finds, so apologies if you get a heap of updates all at once this afternoon!

My next recommendation comes in the form of Yosi Horikawa's new album 'Vapor'. I featured 'Stars' on a recent podcast, but the album is so insane I couldn't help but give it more airtime.

Hailing from Osaka, Yosi has been experimenting with music since the age of 12, sampling various self-made sounds in his bedroom to create DIY overdubs using two cassette decks. After many years of perfecting his craft, Yosi has now begun working with the immortals at the Red Bull Music Academy (including the likes of Dorian Concept), and when you hear his music you can understand why.

Yosi's style is genre-defining, impossible to pin down. It's almost impossible to put his experimental output into any kind of context. Live recordings sit alongside a host of truly unique drum patterns and rhythms, the only common denominator being the uplifting spirit and Eastern mysticism underpinning every track. As a result, I'll let the music speak for itself.

All that's left to say is this is a truly groundbreaking release, with only Matthew Herbert coming to mind when it comes to such bold, pioneering ingenuity.

'Vapor' is out today (24th June) on First Word Records | firstwordrecords.com

Stop.Look.Listen. Interview - Scarper (Plexus Records)

It was a few months back that I was introduced to the new Plexus imprint with their fantastic inaugural release from Pause, as featured on the Stop.Look.Listen. Podcast. Since then, I've been lucky enough to begin working with the label directly and was hugely excited to receive their second release from Scarper with the Unfurl EP.

This latest package harks back to the acidic, ambient electronica of old with a contemporary twist on the Detroit techno sound. Lush, soaring arps, arpeggiated basslines and old skool atmospherics dominate this 6-tracker, offering the listener a truly modern dance classic.

I was intrigued to learn more about the man behind the release, so here we go with the next Stop.Look.Listen. Interview, this time in a somewhat shorter format, providing the artist with a bit more scope  for creative expression. I'm delighted to introduce you to London's Scarper.

BC: What has made you Stop lately?

SCARPER: Thanks to the ever-reliable BBC6 Music (best radio station in the UK), 'Norway' by 'Style of Eye'. One of those tracks that you know is going to be special from the first few bars. Utterly infectious & addictive.

BC: What has made you Look recently?

SCARPER: The view of London from Primrose Hill. Beautiful place to hang out in the summer.

BC: And what has made you Listen?

SCARPER: It's an old one, but I keep going back to Drexciya's 'Neptunes Lair'. Absolute classic which is much more than a Detroit techno record. It's a wide, sprawling album which has all the elements of what I love about electronic music. It's full of juxtapositions: hard, clinical, robotic beats with beautiful melodies & lush ambience. It's funky & thoughtful, simple but complex, basically all the things that initially excited me about electronic music is crammed in there! There's also a high element of mystery & myth surrounding Drexciya, which for a music geek like myself is hard not to get obsessive about.

Scarper's 'Unfurl EP' is out today (24th June) via Plexus Records | plexusrecords.co.uk | Grab your copy from bleep.com

Debian Blak - Six Months From Mars EP (Audio Doughnuts)

Another label I'm super chuffed to be working with is Audio Doughnuts, an independent label founded in a West London houseboat back in 2010.

Through a string of successful club nights across the City featuring top name guests such as Jamie XX, Julio Bashmore and Zed Bias, the label continues to go from strength to strength. Its latest release comes from relative newcomer Debian Blak with his 'Six Months From Mars' EP.

Since emerging in 2011, Debian has become a go-to producer and remixer for music royalty such as Laura Mvula - praise indeed. This latest outing features 4 tracks of heavenly electronica - some call it indie, or bass, others dubstep, and some would liken it more to the choppy MPC stylings of Ta Ku or Flume. Whatever you call it, this is a super soulful, progressive soundscape that draws you further in on every listen. Soaring pads, sharp, harmonised leads and atmospheric percussion are the order of the day; it sounds familiar, but you're not too sure. This is an EP which builds a musical curiosity that'll have you hooked.

Check out my favourite cut from the EP - 'Dive' featuring Kate Wolf from Mt. Wolf. Sick.

'Six Months From Mars' is out now via Audio Doughnuts. Grab it from Juno [here]. | audiodoughnuts.com

Various - ΣCLIPSE (Project: Mooncircle) [Download]

Project: Mooncircle is a label I am having a new and exciting love affair with. In much a similar vein to Innovative Leisure, the imprint releases experimental, super-atmospheric electronica, each release playing like a futuristic film score.

Berlin-based clothing brand Ucon have teamed-up with the PM team on the latest teaser video for their Spring Summer collection. For me, this is what the label’s output is all about – it screams ‘soundtrack’. It’s music that’s written to be felt, to be experienced, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on the label’s video channels from now on.

On this free release, Project: Mooncircle continue us on this journey, with the ‘ΣCLIPSE’ compilation bringing together unreleased material from some of the label’s most cutting-edge artists, including Robot Koch, Submerse, Rain Dog, Sieren, Daisuke Tanabe, Lomovolokno, KRTS, and Daixie.

Hedonistic, and moody, soulful and hypnotic, this mini-album really does have it all. Essential.

‘ΣCLIPSE’ is available for free download from here now. Keep an eye out for more from this super exciting stable at projectmooncircle.com.

D Tiberio - Lie EP (Timetable)

I recently reviewed the ‘Ouroboros’ compilation from label Innovative Leisure as it had me bowled over in the fresh complexity with which it presented soulful electronica. As such, I’m again excited to present the first EP from LA artist D Tiberio due to be released on Nosaj Thing’s Timetable imprint, which has been born out of the same stable.

D Tiberio’s sound perfectly reflects the Innovative Leisure ethos in presenting three cuts of ambient electronic beats awash with carefully constructed drum patterns, moody synth layers, atmospheric samples and melancholic vocals.

‘Lie/Losing Form’ is my favourite track from this 3-tracker in its intensity and distinctive, hypnotic quality. Another EP worthy of repeated listens, each track is a real grower.

The Lie EP is out via Timetable now - you can grab it from iTunes here. | timetablerecords.com

Coco Bryce - Club Tropicana (Fremdtunes)

Dutchman Coco Bryce hits us with his second album ‘Club Tropicana’. It’s a name that’s new to me I must admit, but its introduced me to a fresh style of beat tape.

Bryce uses 14 tracks and 45 minutes to twist and turn through a multitude of influences and create a complex experimental soundscape which journeys through every electronic style imaginable.

From trippy 80s-inspired electronica to unique, moody interpretations of electro, techno, D&B and hip-hop, this album plays like a hedonistic journey through the deep subconscious. Its merits cannot be truly appreciated on first listen, but give it time and Bryce gets in your head. Wicked stuff - check the preview of the lead single above.

Club Tropicana is out on 25th March via Fremdtunes | fremdtunes.com
